Gamma Alpha Alpha Chapter History

Established September 15, 1978, by charter members Lewis J. Sears*, Charles E. Jackson*, Rocky Sharper, Robert Kemp, Jerry Cheatem, and E. Louis Overstreet. GAA officers Lewis J. Sears*, Basileus; Carl L. Lamarr, Vice Basileus; Charles E. Jackson*, Keeper of Records and Seal; Harry S. Reese, Keeper of Finance; Robert Kemp, Chaplain; Rocky Sharper, Jerry Cheatem, Jerry Phillips*. On December 15, 1979, Walter Furnance, William M. Leavell*, Willie J. Oates*, George E. Pearson, and William E. Allen were the first members initiated into GAA.

In May 1979, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc, Gamma Alpha Alpha Chapter instituted a Scholarship Program in Anchorage, Alaska. The Fraternity offers yearly academic scholarships to deserving graduating high school seniors in the Anchorage School District. Each scholarship recipient, after confirmation of enrollment from their college or university, received a monetary award to help defray their individual college expenses. Since the implementation of that Scholarship Program, Gamma Alpha Alpha has awarded over $200, 000 ( Two Hundred Thousand dollars) to graduating high school seniors.

The Brothers of Gamma Alpha Alpha Chapter continue to be at the forefront of community service and social action in the Anchorage community. Throughout the years Gamma Alpha Alpha Chapter has shared the responsibility of leadership in the implementation of our National Programs. Gamma Alpha Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity is actively involved in community outreach and uplift. Members of this prestigious chapter participate in a variety of programs such as Walk for Hope, NAACP, Kid’s Kitchen, Senior Center Projects, Tour De Cure, St Jude, Salvation Army, Foodbank, Clara House, St Frances Kitchen, Youth Basketball League, Police Task Force, Friendship Walk, UAA TRIO’s Mentorship Program and the Youth Leadership Development Program.

The chapter parallels the international organization in that it has brothers that are educators, doctors, lawyers, business professionals, bankers, ministers, county commissioners, city councilmen, Armed Forces officers and personnel, corporate leaders. One of the great strengths of the Gamma Alpha Alpha Chapter is the diversity of its professional membership, with a strong belief and respect of the four Cardinal Principles, Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift.
